"Ideas stem from relationships, and a common bond between mankind.
Whether a person is black, brown or white, whether his language is different,
whether he is rich or poor does not matter - we have a common bond with
everyone in the universe."

Dear everyone
Well, it's like a wedding really: months of preparation and planning and
anticipation, and now it's all over. But I am sure that all of you who
attended the UWCSEA Class of 84 20th reunion in Singapore in August 2004
will have taken away many, many happy and funny memories of our weekend
together. I for one would not have missed it for the world. Jad has toiled
hard to put some fab photos on this website,
so do look at them all. And thanks to everyone else who has put their
own photos on various websites - if you need links to those, let me know.
The weekend started with a slightly surreal evening at the Fez Bar on
Boat Quay - all new since we were at school. It was amazing to meet everyone
in such an informal environment, almost like stumbling across all my old
friends at the local pub! And in the dim light we were able to convince
ourselves and each other that we hadn't changed a bit since school. Of
course, the stark truth was revealed when we moved on to Newton Circus
for a late-night snack - those poor stall-holders!
Saturday was school day, with a lovely hawker feast at lunchtime followed
by a dip in the brand new Olympic-sized pool. The upper school boarders
were also in the pool,
monopolising the high diving board, but once they had left our brave boys
climbed up there.... and climbed back down just as quickly! In the evening
we had a lovely barbeque and met up with some ex-teachers - why is it
that they now look rather young? And then it was into the Small Hall (can
you believe it's still standing?) for THE DISCO.
Very little had changed: the music was the same, the girls still danced
in circles while the boys drank beer and watched - ahhh, memories! And
when the father of our 7th
year DJ arrived to collect his boy, he couldn't resist taking over the
turntables for another couple of hours - who says our generation has no
stamina! Of course, we were sustained by 3 kegs of beer, 10 crates of
Corona and 4 bottles of whiskey..... |
Not surprisingly therefore, dark glasses were in significant evidence
at the Dutch Club on Sunday, where everyone was thrilled to experience
a typical Singapore monsoon downpour - torrential rain for three minutes
then sunshine. Interscols were perused, and even a rather embarrassing
teenage diary made its debut, featuring many of the characters at the
reunion.
So now we're all back home and at work, but the photos are coming in and
you know what, we do look pretty damn hot and pretty damn happy! It was
fantastic to see so many of you again, and to meet your lovely families
- who would have thought that you could all con such nice people into
marrying you! We missed those of you who weren't there, but plans are
already a-foot for a Silver Jubilee Reunion in London in summer 2009,
so start saving those pennies and don't book your holidays for that year!
Many, many thanks to everyone who was involved in the planning and preparation
- personally, I think it was worth every second I spent on it. UWCSEA
Class of 84 - you're wonderful!
With love from Sue Grossey
